Latin lovers?
if there is anyone out there who is taking latin or has in the past and loved it, let me know. im a freshman in highschool, and i have the best teacher ever. she is energetic , fun, and crazy. I have learned so much. and by just know latin i can figure out what some words mean if i didnt know them previously. so.. of you love latin like me let me know, share some secrets, just fun facts about it.

haha. ive always wanted to know latin cuss words. : ]]
I am your man. I took Latin for 4 years at a magnet school in San Antonio, Texas. Our club was the best community I have ever been a part of. My teacher was the best teacher I've ever had. We had hour-and-a-half-long meetings every single Wednesday. We competed and Area, State, and National Junior Classical League competitions, which, in my opinion, are half (or more) of the fun of high school Latin. My school got 1st place in the state 2 of the 4 years I was in high school.

So where am I now? I'm currently a Liberal Arts Honors student at UT-Austin majoring in Latin, Classics, and Linguistics (the other two majors are to further my understanding of Latin). I love Latin more than ever, and am staying involved. I am working towards being a Latin teacher and rejoining the community that created me. As a testament to my teacher's prowess, let me mention that in his 15 years of teacher, I am the 7th Latin teacher that he will have churned out of his program. What other high school teacher can claim such a thing? And you want energetic and fun? This man jumped on top of a desk the first day of Latin 1 to try to express to us how amazing Latin is. I plan on doing the same for my own future students. He's also president of the Texas Classical Association: Clyde Lehmann.

I know that I'm going on about my own experience and you can't really relate to it....yet. But you will! Truth be told, and this is going to sound ridiculous, the only reason I'm on Yahoo! Answers right now looking up questions about Latin is because I just got out of the awards ceremony for this years Texas State JCL convention, and not only did my old high school club get first again, but my little brother got the highest score overall on Decathlon, the all-around test. (I was there to get experience for when I'm a teacher, to relish in the atmosphere of state convention, to cheer on my club, and to judge Dramatic Interpretation, which was one of my specialties in high school). Carrying on tradition. My decision to become a Latin teacher took a long time to make, you know. I wanted to be a doctor (my high school is a medical magnet school), and I fought wanting to become a Latin teacher for the longest time. But after all the competitions, going to Nationals, and going to Italy with Mr. Lehmann and his wife (who is also a Latin teacher), I just had to accept my fate. I could not justify anymore not pursuing that which brought me so much happiness. I said to myself "How can I not do this for a living??" And that was it.

OK, enough about me, sorry I'm going on so much...I hope that you can use that to get a glimpse of how rewarding Latin can be. Alright, so you asked about secrets and fun facts....where do I begin??? Firstly, let me ask where you're located, because where you are determines greatly how much you can participate in local and state competitions; some areas have the infrastructure all set up, other areas just haven't got it yet. If you're east coast of the widwest or the south, you should be good. Like I said, competition is half the fun, or more. So If your teacher doesn't participate in JCL, urge her to take your club to competition next year. It is so totally worth it, because of so many things, not the least of which is to be around and connect with a multitude of others that share much the same enthusiasm about Latin as you do.

There are so many tidbits of hilarious and interesting facts in Roman history. I suggest you read Suetonius' accounts of the lives of Caligula and Nero if you're into that sort of thing. You will acquire more tidbits as your Latin career progresses.

OK, this is crucial: There is a single important resource for getting Latin's curse words. It is this: a book called Extreme Latin (or maybe it's "X-Treme") by Henry Beard (Henricus Barbatus). He's one of the founders of National Lampoon, incidentally. That book is the funniest and more informative book about Latin that I have ever acquired, and I have many, many such books. It will teach you every curse word in Latin and how to use them, and soooooo sooo much more. I implore you to get it.

Take the National Latin Exam, especially if your club isn't in a JCL area. If you get a gold medal four years in a row (which isn't too hard for a good student, which it sounds like you are), you get a free copy of the Oxford Classical Dictionary, which is a huge book and a great Classical resource. If your teacher doesn't do this, ask her about it. Many thousands of students take the NLE every year.

You mentioned how you've learned stuff about English from Latin. So true. This is one of the greatest boons of knowing Latin. I don't know about you, but nobody every taught me English grammar until I had to learn it to understand Latin grammar. Now I can basically just figure out what any vocab word means using my Latin despite never having seen it before. You know, they say that Latin can help you with your SAT scores, and that's totally true -- the College Boards statistics show that Latin students consistently highly outperform students of all other foreign languages...but that's not even one of the main reasons for taking it. Regardless, it helps with you English immensely. It's helped me so much that I am now a writing tutor for the Liberal Arts Honors program at UT-Austin (which I'm a part of). So you've only just begun.

I'm sorry this has been so long, but let it be a testament to the excellence of Latin and it's scholastic culture and my enthusiasm for it. I'm so excited to be messaging someone who would get on Yahoo! Answers just to ask about Latin in this way. I hope you're equally excited to get my response.

Please email me if you have any questions, comments, or feedback: infinitum17@yahoo.com (of course!) My name's Kenny. vale!
Were not Italians the first Latin Lovers?
What happened? The term Latin Lover was invented for the Italian movie stars like Rudy Valentino. Do Italians not think of themselves as Latin anymore? Or is that title gone over to the Latinos?
good question. I've often wondered about this, but I'm guessing that Italian men were considered the first "Latin Lovers", given that the words romance, romantic, amor cannot be spelled without the letters R-O-M-A :-)

Either way, Italian men are great! :-)
